Business and Labour Perspectives on Canada’s Human Resource Challenges

On January 24, 2006, Senior Researcher Clarence Lochhead delivered a presentation to participants of the National Consultation on Career Development conference in Ottawa. In his presentation, he drew attention to the perspectives of business and labour leaders on skill shortages as a serious problem facing the economy, as well as on the quality of workplace training. Recognising the importance of business and labour leaders views about these and other human resource challenges, in terms of their influence on workplace practices and employees’ opportunities for career development, the presentation was based on findings from CLBC’s 2005 Viewpoints Survey. Participants learned what the most pressing skills challenges are for public and private sector managers and labour leaders, as well as what are seen to be the most effective actions in addressing them.
