Assessing and Recognizing Foreign Credentials in Canada – Employers’ Views

Many employers place a greater emphasis on work experience than paper credentials in the hiring process and this colours their perception of the process used to screen potential immigrants to Canada and provincial credentials-assessment services.

Surveyed employers were inclined to recommend amending Immigration Canada’s existing point system to place greater emphasis on work experience. 

Employers urged governments to assist potential immigrants by increasing the transparency of credentials-assessment – giving individuals a chance to better understand provincial and professional requirements.

This survey of employers and representatives of credentials-assessment services also considers communications challenges as new systems and staff turnover work against efforts to improve credentials recognition.
